“We have already agreed to freeze the war along the front line – that is our compromise,” political strategist on the negotiations

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman commented on a report by the Financial Times claiming that U.S. security guarantees would depend on Ukraine’s agreement to withdraw troops from Donbas, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

As the expert notes, recently the Financial Times has been publishing insider information that often comes from certain Russian spokespersons. He explains that this is not an accusation of bias against the newspaper, but rather of inaccuracy, especially since the White House immediately denied this information about security guarantees in exchange for Donbas.

“If we are to believe the publication and its eight sources, then for some reason the Americans need Donbas in order to give it to the Russians. Why? Let’s look at this objectively. Part of Donbas has been captured by the Russians, and part they failed to capture, and the Americans say: ‘Let’s give you security guarantees, but you give this part to the Russians.’ But why not the other way around? After all, the Russians are also asking for security guarantees. Why don’t the Americans say: ‘We will give the Russians security guarantees, but let them return the remaining occupied Donbas to Ukraine’? Why don’t they make such an offer to Russia, and only to us? Why are they taking this side?” Mikhail Sheitelman comments.

According to the expert, the United States is nevertheless pressuring Ukraine over Donbas, considering us weaker, and therefore does not touch Russia. That is why, he reasons, Zelensky said at the end of the negotiations in Abu Dhabi that Ukraine has already made all possible compromises, and now it is Russia’s and the United States’ turn to compromise.

“We have already agreed to freeze the war along the front line – that is our compromise. After all, this means that the Russians keep the temporarily occupied territories, and we will not kill them there. We will not have the right to shoot at you and kill you, even though you will be on our occupied territory in Crimea, Donetsk, and so on. That is our compromise. Now it’s your turn,” Mikhail Sheitelman concludes.
