Trump's strategy on Russia and China has failed: the USA President overestimates his influence

President Donald Trump began his second term positioning himself as a great "peacemaker" and negotiator. But nearly 100 days after his inauguration, he is still struggling to bring peace — particularly in Gaza and Ukraine — and can only point to a handful of agreements after sparking global panic with threats of imposing significant tariffs on exports to the United States.
Specifically, his efforts to persuade Russia (through negotiations over Ukraine) and to confront China (by escalating a trade war that resulted in triple-digit tariffs on Chinese exports) appear to be falling short of expectations, according to Ishaan Tharoor, an international affairs columnist at The Washington Post.
The columnist adds that this week, the Trump administration found itself on the defensive. Dozens of trade and finance ministers gathered in Washington for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund, where officials issued bleak forecasts for the global economy.
According to IMF projections, Trump’s tariffs — or even the prospect of them — will act as a drag on economic growth and could lead to a "significant slowdown."
At a Washington Post event this week, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that she already sees "a degree of slowing growth" on the continent and warned of a "comprehensive impact on global GDP." A likely surge in prices for American consumers could occur within just a few weeks.
China's retaliatory measures have alarmed U.S. business leaders and even top administration officials, who reportedly tried to soften the blow of Chinese restrictions on exports of rare earth metals — critical to production in key American industries.
Sedwill also notes that while both China and Russia are eager to see American decline, Trump is "almost deliberately accelerating this multipolarity, as if he views the world through the lens of 19th-century spheres of influence, acknowledging America's sphere as more limited than it actually is."
