“Trump Presented It as His Victory”: Expert Explains Who Actually Negotiated the Energy Truce

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman commented on Trump’s statement that Putin had kept his word regarding the ceasefire and assessed whether it now makes any sense at all to rely on U.S. efforts, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“If you try to parse Trump’s words, it’s obvious that he didn’t negotiate anything with anyone at all. It was our delegation in Abu Dhabi that negotiated a one-week ceasefire. Witkoff was present there; he reported back to Trump, and Trump presented it as his own victory — as he always presents everything as his victories. Like, I made peace, I brought things down, I melted the icebergs… Trump is always the winner. So he himself had no idea what the agreement actually consisted of, and then later voiced it all after the fact. And Putin, of course, couldn’t resist sticking it to Trump and deliberately struck in such a way that Trump would have to cover for Putin — because if Trump didn’t cover for Putin, Trump himself would lose face. Putin could have waited a week from the day Trump made his statement, could have waited until Friday, but he struck on Tuesday specifically to humiliate Trump,” Mikhail Sheitelman argues.
In this whole situation, he notes, it’s important to understand that we shouldn’t rely on anyone, and Trump’s words cross out any talk of security guarantees. As the expert reminds, Sybiha said that Ukraine would sign an agreement with the U.S., and Russia would also sign one with the U.S., but if Russian troops attacked again, Trump would say that the agreement stipulates a ceasefire for just two days.
Against this backdrop, he notes, Senator Graham’s call to give Ukraine Tomahawk missiles sounds strange — he was trying to adapt and get ahead of events. As the expert explains, Graham thought Trump would get angry over the massive shelling and wanted to immediately raise the issue of missiles, but Trump, as we see, still hasn’t decided to put pressure on Putin.
“He said it before hearing the reaction. That is, he thought: ‘Putin has just screwed Trump over, this is the perfect time to say we should give Tomahawks, and I, Graham, will look like the winner — I’m the one who asked Trump to give Tomahawks.’ A damn theater. Everyone is trying to take credit for something that hasn’t happened yet. Trump is trying to take credit for a ceasefire that doesn’t exist, and Graham for Tomahawks that won’t happen. None of this exists. And we can rely on no one but ourselves,” Mikhail Sheitelman concludes.
