Strategy is even more necessary when you have fewer resources than the enemy: an expert explained what needs to change in military policy

Political strategist Serhii Haidai explained that Ukraine needs to rebuild its military policy around the idea that a soldier is the highest value and develop a strategy for defeating an opponent with greater resources, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on the “7 Steps” channel.

“Strategy, for me, is an algorithm for victory. Although I’m not a military professional, I’ll take on that role. It seems to me that our military policy lacks a doctrine of preserving the lives of Ukrainians. We inherited a Soviet, or even Russian, doctrine in the army that says ‘a soldier is expendable material for the top leadership,’” Serhii Haidai explained.

According to the program’s guest, under any strategy the most valuable asset—the Ukrainian soldier and Ukrainians in general—must be preserved. He emphasized that this is the most important principle that should be taken into account when shaping military policy.

“Strategy is much more necessary when you have no resources or fewer resources than the enemy. That’s when it works. When you have plenty of resources, there is no strategy—just smash the enemy and you’ll defeat them. But when you have few resources…” Serhii Haidai stressed.

At the same time, the expert recalled the well-known story about the victory of the 300 Spartans. In fact, he noted, there were not just 300 but about 5,000 Greeks in total, yet they had a strategy: stand in a narrow passage and block the route, which ultimately brought victory.
