Blackout in Europe: Large-scale power outages in Portugal and Spain


The blackout in Europe occurred on April 28, with Portugal and Spain suffering the most, according to preliminary information.
According to Publico, the Lisbon metro stopped, passengers were trapped in the cars, and the Porto metro also closed. Traffic lights went out in many cities, mobile communications were intermittent throughout the country, and ATMs were not working. The airports of Lisbon, Porto, and Faro switched to using backup generators.
Power outages, writes El Mundo, also occurred in Spain. Thus, the Barajas airport in Madrid was temporarily closed, and the metro stopped in Barcelona and Madrid. Traffic lights, mobile communications, and payment terminals were also out in Spain.


Passenger trains were completely stopped, announced the Spanish national railway company Renfe.
Power outages have been reported in France and Germany, with power outages also reported in Andorra, Euronews reports.
Authorities and power suppliers in the affected countries said they were doing everything they could to restore power as quickly as possible.
