"Let's Talk Directly Now While Trump Is Busy with Iran" – Expert on Zelenskyy's Letter to Putin

Political analyst and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Musiienko, explained that Zelenskyy's open letter to Putin is a test balloon aimed at gauging how ready Russia is for negotiations at this stage of the war, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

At present, the expert notes, we are witnessing escalation from both sides. Ukraine is carrying out large-scale strikes against Russia; our drones effectively "opened" the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. We are expanding our capabilities and, together with our partners, inflicting damage on Russia's economy and defense sector. Through this letter, he emphasizes, Zelenskyy is telling Putin that the choice is his and that peace talks can begin.

“Another important aspect of this letter is that it moves away from the spirit of Anchorage. There is no more Anchorage—let’s talk directly now, while Trump is focused on Iran. We are not afraid, we are ready, and our position is strong. However, the prerequisite is a ceasefire. Ukraine is making a clear and straightforward demand: stop the fire, stop the attacks. Russia must end its terror against civilians, stop striking our cities, residential buildings, food warehouses, postal logistics terminals, industrial facilities, and so on. Once these strikes, shelling, and assaults on the front line stop, then we can begin discussing something,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.

According to the expert, Putin has already responded indirectly while speaking with journalists on the evening of June 4, likely without even having read Zelenskyy’s letter. In his remarks, Putin stated that ongoing hostilities are not an obstacle to negotiations, meaning that Russia has not changed its position in any way.

“At this stage, what kind of response can we expect? I believe it will be negative because Russia will try to use the summer period for further escalation. We are currently in a phase of escalation and are likely to remain in it for another four to five months. This is essentially the summer-autumn period. Right now, there is simply no window of opportunity for negotiations,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
