Arrest of Russia’s Shadow Fleet Tankers: Expert Assesses Whether Europe Will Begin Blocking the Baltic Sea

Political analyst and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Musiienko, says that Northern European countries have the means to close the Baltic Sea to Russia—it is now simply a matter of political will, Politeka reports.
He shared this opinion on his blog.
"Europe must finally stop taking half-measures against Russia’s shadow fleet and instead block the Baltic Sea for Russia. All the necessary capabilities already exist. Just look at the countries surrounding Russia in the Baltic region—they are all NATO members. What is the problem? Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Poland, and Denmark. Together, their combined air and naval capabilities surpass Russia’s in the Baltic Sea, and they are fully capable of stopping its commercial fleet," Musiienko argues.
According to him, such actions would need to be supported by an appropriate legal framework and backed by France and the United Kingdom, as both are nuclear powers. In his view, if Northern European countries are concerned about provoking unnecessary escalation with Russia’s navy or the Russian warships escorting these convoys, the involvement of Britain and France would serve as a strong deterrent.
As evidence, Musiienko points out that the United Kingdom detained a vessel from Russia’s shadow fleet, followed by France. According to The Telegraph, he notes, the British government plans to auction off the crude oil seized from the tanker. The cargo is estimated to be worth around £35 million (more than $47 million), with the proceeds expected to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
"Just imagine—each tanker is worth around $40–50 million. If they detained just ten of them, think of how many more drones could be purchased, how much could be invested in the defense industry and missile programs. And if 100 ships were seized, the investment in strengthening Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities would be truly significant. Instead of Russia profiting from this oil, Ukraine could benefit from it—and then return the favor to Russia not in cash, but in the form of devastating strikes and crippling sanctions. The funds could be transferred to Ukraine so it can purchase military equipment, according to the British government," Musiienko said.
