Shortage of Patriot systems against Russian ballistic missiles: an expert explains how to solve the problem

Military expert Oleg Starikov explained where Ukraine made a mistake. He spoke about this on his channel.

“One of the strategic mistakes I keep talking about was the hope that foreign countries would help us. During a war, you cannot rely 100% on outside assistance. That’s the strategic point. The only area where we did not make a mistake is drone production. But everything related to other military equipment… it’s like Iran War 2.0. Who is fighting the war? The Americans. Who produces air defense systems? They do, of course, and everything will go to where they are fighting, and no one will supply us,” explains Oleg Starikov.

According to him, even if the EU unlocks a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, there still won’t be supplies. The United States, the expert says, produces only 600 missiles for Patriot systems per year, while Japan produces just 100 missiles—that’s the problem.

“We are now talking about ballistic missiles. Cruise missiles can be intercepted by European systems. Yes, cruise missiles are subsonic, and they can be shot down. But ballistic missiles… I wouldn’t count on us having enough surface-to-air guided missiles to counter them,” Starikov argues.

Intercepting 50% of ballistic missiles, the expert notes, is already a good result—it shows that Ukrainian air defense forces have learned to work against ballistic threats, not to mention cruise missiles. However, the problem is that the Russians first overload air defense systems with drones and then strike targets with ballistic missiles.
